The Culprit of Dull, Lifeless, Color

Are you tired of getting your hair colored only to have it quickly fade and become dull after just a few weeks? Do your highlights seem to be getting darker or brassy? Has your brown color changed into an ash tone? The most likely culprit is calcium found hard water. Calcium can cause damage to the hair cuticle and create microscopic rocks (aka buildup) making hair look and feel dryer. Other harsh minerals such as copper (found in swimming pools), iron/metals (boxed color), and chlorine found in ordinary tap water, dull hair color by covering it up creating an invisible barrier that is impossible to shampoo away. This barrier makes color appear darker, dull, and inhibit shine; leaving hair lifeless and flat despite the quality of products used. To make matters worse, these minerals continually build up, and regular shampoo can't remove them.

And there are even more culprits to beware of. Everything you ingest/inhale or apply to your nails/skin, winds up in your hair! Medications, supplements, recreational drugs, food, pesticides, alcohol, cleaning products, acrylic nail products, lotions, environmental pollutants, and even nicotine if you're a smoker, all wind up in the hair follicle. This is why many drug testing facilities are now taking hair samples as part of pre-employment drug screenings. Much like rings on the inside of a tree trunk show how old the tree is, our hair is an historical record/reflection of our health, habits and lifestyle.

If you have ever used boxed color, chemical relaxers or perms from a grocery store, you now have metal in your hair that counteracts with many salon services giving unpredictable results. Despite what the label says on these products, they have a very high metallic content that is very damaging to the hair; that's why they all come packaged with thick conditioners that coat the hair cuticle in silicone and wax to make it appear healthy, soft and smooth. *Hint; the strong smell of these products is a dead giveaway!

The key is getting a Malibu Makeover treatment from the Salon to gently remove these minerals found in hard-water, along with medications and other environmental pollutants. This treatment is 100% Vegan, food-grade, and made entirely of natural ingredients. After one treatment, most clients notice their color has brightened up to two shades and incredible shine as well as softness returns. Styling also becomes easier as hair responds better to products used and actually dries faster with less frizz and greater control.

I have started giving these treatments prior to all color services and have noticed more predictable results, greater client satisfaction and superior shine. To ensure minerals don't build back up, I recommend home-care maintenance treatments done once per week.

Laying the Foundation for Great Hairstyling

The foundation of great hairstyling is in the products we use. Choosing the right shampoo and conditioner for your hair type is paramount to achieving a fantastic look. Chemically treated hair needs added moisture, protein, and vital nutrients while virgin hair (hair that hasn't been colored, permed or chemically straightened) has different needs depending on texture. There is no one-product-fits-all formula for every individual; regardless of what the label on the bottle might say.

Professional hair care products are sold in salons for a reason; because there are trained professionals there to recommend and assist in choosing the right ones for each person. This takes the guesswork out of making the decision on your own and ensures guaranteed results. You can sample products for yourself during a salon visit, learn how to use them, and feel the difference immediately. All of this adds up to greater confidence and consistent outcomes that can't be matched from a trip to the grocery store.

I know that in today's economy money is tight and every dollar counts more than ever; that's why buying high quality, salon professional, hair care products that aren't watered down or made with waxes and fillers actually last longer and yield better results. Instead of buying shampoo and conditioner six or more times per year, you can save time and money by investing a little more up front on a liter size that will last all year long. Of course length of hair, texture, and the frequency of shampooing play a part in how far that product will stretch, but on average, a person can expect at least 4-6 months or more from typical salon sized hair care products because they are concentrated and therefore only require a dime size amount per application. Styling products will last 9 months to a year; even when sharing with other family members. Best of all, every product will be the right one for your individual, hair care needs; no waste! This is something I've personally experienced for years and know to be true for my clients time and again.

Whatever style you are looking to achieve, seek help from a professional hairstylist in choosing the right products along with a great haircut to lay the proper foundation to make your life easier each and every day!
